Technology companies often say that technology that doesn’t touch people’s lives is irrelevant. The same goes for an advertising company firmly rooted in helping brands play a meaningful role in people’s lives, we believe that ideas that do not make an impact in people’s lives are meaningless.
That’s why when the opportunity to partner with Zimplats, one of our clients, and other brands like Optinova, Lancet and Stanbic at the launch of the Beyond the skin initiative in Manicaland Province at Mutare General Hospital, we grabbed it with both hands.
This event was right up our alley since Dicomm has been walking the albinism journey with Zimplats since 2017, creating supporting communication to ensure that they reach the intended audience to continue effecting community behavioural change. The aim for this year was to commemorate International World Albinism Day by extending the Beyond the skin initiative “kumakomoyo”. Our role was to assist with communication for donations and also to invite those with albinism to the event so that they could access donations in the form of the much-needed free eye tests and glasses, sunscreens, and sun hats.
Despite the cold weather, the event which was well attended was graced by people from all walks of life from the remotest parts of the country as far as Buhera. Representatives from the Government, United Nations, and the Disability Board were also present. What makes this event so special is the fact that the previously marginalised albinism community were all smiles, they sang and danced the day away as they celebrated this day as one people with one purpose.
Speaking at the event, Zimplats Head of Corporate Affairs, Mrs. B Chindove thanked Dicomm McCann for coming up with the Beyond the skin theme that has been running since the launch of the initiative 5 years ago.
Over and above the communication initiatives, testimonial videos recorded by team Dicomm from people with albinism who have not let the world dictate what they can or cannot do were played at the event to inspire those who feel life has not dealt them a sweet hand.
The Dicomm team had a chance to talk to one of the program’s beneficiaries, a grandmother from Buhera, Mrs. E Dzokurasa who is taking care of her granddaughter with albinism. She expressed joy at the initiative saying that she believed the donations would go a long way towards helping people with albinism.
At Dicomm, we’re always humbled when we get to play a meaningful role in people’s lives.
